SUMMARY:Ray Wood's "Singing DAX/Instagram Girl"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Exhibit\nAfter 40 years\, Wood is back with another solo show at the Maturango Museum to share his paintings of models and actresses from around the world posing by request with his dog “DAX” \nDAX is half black labrador retriever and bloodhound and loves to sing and fluctuate his voice to TV programs and music. DAX made his debut singing on Instagram about 2 years ago and Wood discovered people not only loved DAX for his singing ability but also his charm and the way he would interact with people. As time went on\, models from around the world asked to be painted with DAX and things began to take off. Singing DAX is now a household name on Instagram and people ask to be painted with him daily. \nDAX usually poses with models\, but in his time off\, he has models wearing his Singing DAX hat or his logo in the paintings. Wood discovered that art is an excellent way to bring people together and gives them a common ground to discover each other and their cultures. DAX now has over 750 followers from around the world and not only brings a positive message to people enjoying beautiful models but also a subliminal message with a little humor. \nInstagram is an excellent forum for artists because it allows them to get immediate feedback and stimulates good positive conversation. Posting paintings daily on Instagram with music has also been very inspirational and has motivated Wood to do hundreds of paintings. By allowing everyone to translate easily it enables people from around the world to be able to communicate freely and feel comfortable while talking with one another. \nPlease enjoy the show and you can always enjoy seeing DAX on Instagram @ singingdax \n

DESCRIPTION:The September equinox is approaching! The word ‘equinox’ comes from the Latin words ‘aequus\,’ meaning equal\, and ‘nox\,’ meaning night. Therefore\, ‘equinox’ translates to ‘equal night’ in Latin\, symbolizing the nearly equal length of day and night. This marks the transition from longer summer days to shorter winter days for us in the Northern Hemisphere. Days from now until the winter solstice grow shorter each day\, and the nights grow longer. The winter solstice marks a turning point where the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. \nAt the Maturango Museum\, we enjoy celebrating the four times each year when the Earth and sun experience a special relationship: the equinoxes and solstices. This connection helps us stay in tune with the changing seasons. \nJoin us as we create celestial greeting cards in the style of “Junk Journaling”. A Junk Journal card is a handmade creation that uses various papers\, pockets\, and tags to craft an engaging greeting card with spaces to tuck in a handmade note or greeting. Arrive by 10am to give yourself plenty of time to explore the different options available for your card-making experience. \nAs a bonus\, the China Lake Astronomical Society may bring their solar scopes for visitors to view the sun safely. Members’ participation depends on their schedule and the weather.

Join the Maturango Museum on a tour of several meadows on the Kern Plateau. \nThe Kern Plateau is a relatively flat area between 7\,500 and 8\,500 feet in elevation. There are about 30 meadows with streams and rich soil abundant with plants and flowers. Some years\, there are lots of frogs! \nIt will be fun to explore in the cool mountain air. The meadows we could visit include: Troy\, Powell\, Granite Knob\, Paloma\, Bonita and Osa. \nMeet at the museum at 7am. You will be required to sign a liability waiver. Great trip for kids and leashed well-behaved dogs. \nBuy tickets on the museum website maturango.org/events   The cost is $35 for museum members ($60 for 2 members)\, $45 nonmembers ($80 for 2). DESCRIPTION:Warner V. Graves III’ Art Exhibit: “Other Worlds” \n  \n“The landscapes here have always been a source of inspiration for me\,  \nmy work reflects a deep connection to place and history.” Warner \n  \nWarner V. Graves is an artist known for his contemporary take on the rugged beauty of the California desert. Using bold color\, broad brush strokes\, line and texture and reacting to intuitive impulses\, the work unfolds as an exploration of the natural world and its lore. From a vintage stone cabin in Snow Creek\, (a small secluded village at the foot of Mt. San Jacinto)\, Warner creates paintings of simplified and stylized forms to convey the monumentality and spiritual awe of the surrounding desert wilderness. The work is strongly rooted to the various locations in and around the arid regions of California and reflects interest ranging from historic travel posters\, the natural sciences\, hiking\, and getting lost in the desert. \nThe playful use of color is a direct reference to the Canadian Group of Seven. Local early 20th century artist Agnes Pelton and her associated Taos School of Transcendental Art continues to be a source of inspiration. With the current series Warner hopes the viewer finds the beauty in the depiction of the desert environment but is also challenged to see the natural world not as a static form but as a living entity\, imbued with vitality and flux. \nThis fantastic exhibit will be in the Coso Room through August 24. \n

The\nstudy area is situated in a region of forested mountains and alpine meadows on the eastern\nside of the Sierra Nevada Mountains\, between June Lake and Mammoth Lakes\, California. Her\nstudy area includes the Owens River Headwaters Wilderness\, Ansel Adams Wilderness area\,\nand surrounding Inyo National Forest Land. Her presentation focuses on the plants of this area.

SUMMARY:Wildflower Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Maturango Museum’s Annual Wildflower Exhibit 2025 \nFriday\, March 28 – Sunday\, March 30. \nOpen 10 am – 5 pm\, Friday & Saturday\, and noon to 4 pm on Sunday. \n  \nThe Wildflower Exhibit features wildflowers that grow in and around Ridgecrest\, including eastern Sierra canyons. We concentrate on the watershed areas that feed into the Indian Wells Valley. Even though this year is dry\, we expect blooms somewhere in our large collecting area\, most likely at higher elevations where cooler temperatures and moisture linger in protected microclimates. We expect perennial shrubs with deeper root systems to bloom by late March. A microscope will be available for visitors to look at parts of flowers. You may even see an insect on the plant! \nAlso\, we’ll be hosting two speakers and three workshops over the three-day event. \nFriday\, March 28 from 1 pm – 3 pm\, the Oasis Garden Club is hosting a “Flower Arrangement Workshop”. This event will include garden plants grown by club members to be used in the flower arrangement. \nFriday at 6:30 pm\, Glenn Harris will present\, “Climate and Vegetation.” Glenn is a retired BLM employee who specialized in Botany\, soils\, Water Resources\, Hydrology\, Air Quality\, Range Management\, and Fire Management. He currently volunteers as a docent for the Museum. \nSaturday\, March 29\, at 1 pm\, Andrea Pelch will talk about “Mesquite Pods and Cactus Pads – Food from the Desert.” Andrea will give a presentation and interactive demonstrations to learn about the nutritious qualities of Mesquite pod flour and nopals (cactus pads).  The display table will also include other local\, edible wild foods\, and a few surprises. YES! – there will be samples of items to taste during the presentation. \nSaturday\, March 29\, at 3 pm\, Rachel Tageant\, gives her presentation on\, “A Floristic Inventory of the Owens River Headwater area\, Mono County\, California.” Rachel is a grad student at Claremont Graduate University and the California Botanic Garden\, and her floristic study area is the Owens River Headwater Wilderness Area\, which is on the east side of the crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake. DESCRIPTION:Searles Valley Historical Society Museums Field Trip Saturday\,  February 15\nHave you ever driven through Trona on your way to someplace else\, passing all the wonderful museums and wished you could stop and take a look? I know I have thought about it\, but it can sometimes be hard to do spur of the moment since several of the museum buildings are open by appointment only. Guess what? We’ve made those appointments for this trip. \nCome with us to the Searles Valley Historical Society Museums. We’ll be visiting the Fire Museum\, History House\, Trona Railway Museum and Caboose\, and the Old Guest House Museum. Docents will be on-hand at each location to guide us through their rich history and their exhibits. Want to peruse at your own pace? You can do that as well during the time we are at each area. \nOur journey will start at the Maturango Museum and we’ll drive over to Trona through Poison Canyon. Oh by the way\, did you know that the “real name” of Poison Canyon is Salt Wells Canyon? I didn’t. I’ve already learned something. \nWe’ll make a brief stop at the Trona Pinnacles turn-off to view two monuments; John Searles’ Freight Wagon Route Monument and the Epsom Salts Monorail Monument. If you want to learn more about the Epsom Salts Monorail\, Maturango Museum has a great book on this subject. \n  From there we’ll continue to the Fire Museum. Inside this museum are two antique fire engines\, a 1924 Stutz and a 1938 Ahren-Fox. Displays in the Fire Museum include 20 photographs of major fires in Argus\, Borosolvay\, and Trona and other fire memorabilia. \n We’ll then make a quick stop at the Trona Rest Stop to take care of business and proceed to the History House\, Caboose\, and Railway Museum. \nThe History House is one of the oldest residential houses in Trona (built around 1920) and is a treasure trove of items from yesteryear. The Trona Railway Museum displays artifacts from the Trona Railway and the Caboose will be open to those able to navigate the steep stairs to get in and out. \n We will then return to the Trona Rest Stop for lunch. The kiosk at the Rest Stop was a joint project of the BLM Ridgecrest Office and the Searles Valley Historical Society. There \nare 16 panels that have information about the local area\, local mining\, local history\, sightseeing and recreational opportunities\, and desert safety. \nAfter lunch we’ll head to our final stop\, the Old Guest House Museum. This building was built around 1917 and is one of the oldest buildings in \nSearles Valley. Originally it was built as four apartments and was remodeled as a guest house with twelve rooms for visitors to Trona. The twelve rooms \nshow events in Searles Valley from the early mining days to the present plant ownership. Since this is our final stop\, once you have finished viewing all the cool “stuff”\, you can head home\, we just ask that you let the Field Trip leader know you are leaving. \n9am: Meet at the Maturango Museum for check-in. Participants will be required to sign a liability waiver. Car caravan will be organized and for those that want to carpool\, we’ll figure it out there. \nThe cost is $25 for museum members ($40 for 2 adult members)\, $30 for nonmembers ($50 for 2 adults). Pets are not allowed. Buy tickets below or come to the Maturango Museum Store. \nBe sure you have enough gas (less than 100 miles round trip)\, car\, and tires in good running order. Usual dress code for field trips applies: hat\, sunscreen\, comfortable walking shoes\, layered clothing\, \nwater\, and camera (although some of the buildings ask for no photographs).
