Conservation in the IWV – Wildlife, Desert Gardens and Water
— Contributed by Melanie Branson
Maturango’s Free Saturday, Apr 12, 11am-2pm is featuring the Conservation in the Indian Wells Valley event again for the second year. We are excited to share the work of the amazing conservation stewards in our local area. Come and find out a little bit about what is happening in the IWV to promote nature restoration, biodiversity of both plants and animals, and all importantly: water conservation. This year we are happy to have several returning organizations including the Eastern Kern County Resources Conservation District, Kerncrest Audubon Society, NAWS China Lake Environmental, the local chapter of the American Chemical Society featuring Earth Day interactives and Xeriscape Specialists from the IWV Water District to answer your native/xeric plant and irrigation-water saving questions. We are enthusiastic to have new organizations on board for our April event; the Burroughs High School Environmental Club leading nature-focused crafts, the Mohave Ground Squirrel Conservation Council, and the Ridgecrest Tortoise Club. We are hoping to have three to four additional organizations confirm their participation in the next week. A puzzle for our members – do you know which of our featured organizations work on the following conservation projects?
1. Surveying and cataloging 1,000 year-old creosote rings.
2. Motus Tower for the Maturango Museum (see https://motus.org/)
3. Studies the effects of environmental factors like rain tables and mechanical scarification on germinating seeds.
4. Awarded a grant for an eco-restoration of vegetation around a wildlife guzzler in the El Paso Mountains.
5. Promoting public awareness of the Raven Predation problem and the correlation with human trash access.
6. Advocates for healthy habitats, conducts workshops with the Wildlife Society and does their own wildlife research.
Who knew so many cool nature things happen here in our valley?
